Artist Spotlight: Asriel Davis
Asriel Davis has been attracted to the organ and sacred music since childhood. In this brief interview, Asriel reveals the inspirations behind his musical journey and shares his thoughts on improvisation and collaborating with Isaiah Shim, among other perspectives.
You’ve been playing piano and organ since you were six years old. What got you started in the organ world?
Growing up, my teacher Luther Washington was an amazing organist. Hearing him in my early years first attracted me to the instrument. Then as a student accompanist in college, I was able to play some awesome organs around the world with the Oakwood University Aeolians choral ensemble.
When did you first develop your passion for sacred music? Favorite hymns/sacred pieces?
I started playing anthems and hymns from an early age in church. The harmonic language along with the text was what grabbed me even then. So many hymns come to mind: “The Church's One Foundation,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “How Great Thou Art…”
What’s your favorite part of being an organist?
Having such a variety of colors at one's disposal–from the soft lush stops that feel like a warm hug to the powerful sounds that only an organ can make.
You’ve performed at churches across the United States and abroad—any concert(s) that stands out?
Oakwood University Aeolians Concert in London, UK 2017
You’re a “viral organist,” posting to YouTube and TikTok, among other platforms. What was your original objective in sharing your talents on social media and has that been fulfilled?
It was an honest piece of me just sharing videos I felt would give comfort and inspire. I believe it has been and continues to be fulfilled.
Define what constitutes a successful organ improvisation. What kinds of improvisation can we expect to see in the “Dueling Keyboards” program?
A recognizable theme coupled with compelling improvisational tools used by the performer. For the concert you will hear improvisations based on hymn tunes in real time, and improvs with some help from the audience.
Have you and Isaiah Shim ever performed together?
This will be the very first time! In my mind, Isaiah has been that amazing neighbor you have, but you all just haven't invited each other over for dinner yet. Now we get to bring our recipes to the table and provide a tasteful program for the community.
What’s next for Asriel Davis?
